Why Pura Vida

Pura Vida is a phrase Nathan picked up while studying for the fall semester of 2005 in Costa Rica. Pura Vida literally means 'pure life' and employs the concept of living one's life as free and uncluttered as possible. Nathan wrote a blog about this while a student at Geneva College - Read Nate's blog

While in Costa Rica Nathan visited some outlying villages in Nicaragua and Guatemala, and was convicted that we should do what we can to help those who don't have as much. Following his graduation from Geneva College in 2006, Nathan contracted with the Mennonite Central Committee to administer micro-loans in a remote area of Brazil. Nathan's transportation while in Brazil was to have been by motorcycle, and it was while riding his motorcycle near Winchester that he had the accident that took his life on July 19, 2006.

Proceeds from the Pura Vida run will be used to fund a scholarship for post-high-school education for a Jefferson County North Senior. In 2009 a portion of the funds also went to help build a school in Costa Rica.
